The four-axle units were high-horsepower racers built to appeal to railroads in the early 1980s looking to turbocharge their growing intermodal business. They could be found in multiples at the head of piggyback and auto rack and then-new double-stack container trains. There were few drag freights or slow-moving manifests for these thoroughbreds in their early years.

Replacing the |Universal Series} U36B in the GE catalog, the first prototypes were built at Erie, Pennsylvania, in 1980 for SP subsidiary Cotton Belt (St Louis Southwestern). By the last year of production in 1985 some 222 locomotives had been constructed for US railroads with a further eight for export. The design found customers in several of the larger Class 1s of the period: Santa Fe, Conrail, Seaboard System, Southern Railway and Southern Pacific. With the mergers of the mid-1980s and the Conrail split of 1999 the bulk of the fleet ended up with CSX and Norfolk Southern. Circa 2000 the CSX roster was overflowing with B36-7s, with around 140 former Conrail and Seaboard units operating all over the eastern half of the US.

In 2018 a few units still operate for secondary owners and several previously owned units were exported to South America.

The Rapido Trains HO Scale B36-7 features prototypically accurate, roadname-specific detailing on all five body variations. By the mid-Sixties, EMD unveiled the latest Geep - the 2000 horsepower GP38. This was a non-turbocharged locomotive, similar in appearance to the earlier GP35. The GP38 had two radiator fans and paired exhaust stacks. The GP38 was longer than the GP35 and featured a new style radiator grille and a straighter sill and redesigned fuel tank. As with other locomotives, GP38s could be ordered with, or without, dynamic brakes, as well as a variety of other options (a few had dual control stands, steam generators for passenger service, some railroads specified their own lighting options and short hood options). 16-645 prime mover and a D32 direct current (DC) generator, similar to all the other locomotives produced previously by EMD. The push to higher horsepower, however, necessitated larger DC generators and in 1971 EMD introduced a new option for the GP38 - an AR10 alternating current (AC) alternator in place of the generator. This was a solution to the space problems encountered by the large generator, because alternators were smaller, yet offered the same electrical capacity. And thus was born the GP38AC, which are externally identical to the GP38. The GP38 was a popular engine, filling a niche for railroads requiring a locomotive for lighter duty and for use on trackage that was often not for high-speed mainline trains. Charles shops to extend the operating lives of the GP9s. The “GP9RM” was the result, which was divided into three groups: The 4000/4100 series were rebuilt as road units, the 7000 series as switchers and the 7200/200 series as “mother” and “slug” pairs. The slugs lacked a prime mover, instead drawing power from the mother to operate the traction motors. The long hoods were cut down and ballast was added to help weigh them down.

The GP9RM fleet included a chopped short hood, addition of three coloured marker lights on both ends, the bell moved to the side of the hood and the dynamic brake blister converted to intake filters. Internally, the units had upgraded 16-645C prime movers and improved electrical systems. The 4000/4100 series road units were changed to have the short hood end designated as the front, with the control stand reoriented, while the 7000/7200 switchers retained the long hood designated as the front. As with any rebuild project, there were differences from one loco to the next as well as minor changes over the ten year rebuild program. One could see these locos all across the CN North American system.

The Rapido GP9RM represents the locomotives rebuilt from the original phase II GP9 locomotives, with details corresponding to the earliest rebuilds, right on up to the last, in 1988. The biggest variation of the slug rebuilds was the use of Blomberg and Flexicoil trucks. Both variations are represented! Starting in 1994, CN applied Belt-Pack remote control systems to the 7200/200 series locomotives. Some of these new features included extra antennas and strobe lights – all details that will be featured on the 7200 series from Rapido!

The Rapido Trains HO scale CN GP9RM locomotive features:

Heavy diecast frame with super detailed piping and traction cables

Detailed Blomberg trucks, with and without outside brake shoes

Traction motor details on gearbox

Working track lights, class lights, control stand lights and flashing belt pack lights on select mother-slug sets (Late sets)

Multiple battery box styles

Spark arrestors or open exhaust stacks as appropriate

Metal side handrails

Working ditch lights on 4000, 4100 and 7000 series locos

Front and rear plows or curved plate pilots on appropriate road numbers

Footboard pilots on mother units

Detailed walkway tread

The Rapido Trains HO scale CN GP9RM Slug features:

Heavy diecast frame with super detailed piping and traction cables

Fully motorized

Detailed Blomberg trucks with outside brake shoes or Flexicoil trucks

Traction motor details on gearbox

Detailed walkway tread

Metal side handrails

Footboard pilots or curved plate pilots on appropriate road numbers

Working headlights

Both models are available as DC/Silent (21-pin DCC Ready) or DCC/ESU LokSound

Rapido HO Scale Erie EMD E8A DCC Sound Diesel Locomotive #820 -
