Originally developed during the 1930s, the B-17 was designed to conduct long-range bombing missions while using multiple defensive machine guns to protect itself against enemy fighters.

The B-17E represented a major development of the Flying Fortress design. These changes helped address vulnerabilities identified during early bomber operations.

Powered by four Wright R-1820 Cyclone radial engines, the B-17E combined long-range performance with a substantial bomb load and multiple defensive gun positions.
