How to change my NCE Throttle ID / Cab Address?

🚂 Understanding NCE Throttles and Cab IDs: What They Are, Why They Matter, and How to Change Them

If you’re running model trains with an NCE DCC system, you’ve probably heard the term “Throttle” or “Cab.” These are the handheld controllers you use to operate your locomotives — the devices that let you adjust speed, direction, lighting, and sound.

But behind the scenes, each throttle needs its own unique identity, known as a Cab ID or Throttle Address. Let’s break down what that means, why it’s important, and how to change it.

🎮 What Is an NCE Throttle?

An NCE throttle (sometimes called a “Cab”) is your train controller. It’s how you communicate with your DCC system.

When you plug in your NCE Power Cab, ProCab, or any other NCE throttle, it connects to the Cab Bus — a network that links all throttles and accessories to your command station.

Each throttle sends digital commands through that bus, telling your locomotives what to do. You can think of the throttle as the remote control and the command station as the translator that sends those commands to the track.

🧠 What Is a Throttle ID (Cab Address)?

Every NCE throttle on your layout must have a unique Cab ID.
This number allows your command station to recognize each throttle separately — kind of like giving each remote control its own “channel.”

If two throttles share the same ID, they’ll conflict, causing odd behavior like:

  • Loss of control over a train

  • Incorrect responses to button presses

  • Throttles disconnecting or freezing

That’s why setting unique Cab IDs is essential, especially when multiple operators are running trains on the same layout or club system.

⚙️ Valid Cab ID Ranges

The valid range of Cab IDs depends on which NCE system you’re using. Here’s a quick reference:

System Default Cab ID Valid ID Range Notes
DCC Twin 0 and 1 2–7 (slave mode) for throttles; 8–10 for accessories Locos programmed on DCC Twin default to addresses 3 and 4.
Power Cab (2 Amp) 2 2–5 (Cab 5 requires firmware 1.65); 8–10 for accessories 6–7 are reserved.
SB5 Smart Booster 2–7 Expands Power Cab to more throttles and more power.
Power Pro 2–63 Full-size system with wide range support.
RB02 Radio Base Station 2–17 for wireless ProCabs; 2–48 for other wireless throttles Max of 16 radio ProCabs.

🔧 How to Change (or Reset) an NCE Throttle ID

Changing your throttle’s Cab ID is quick and easy — and it works on any NCE throttle, including the Power Cab.

Here’s how:

  1. Hold down the “SELECT LOCO” button while plugging the throttle into your Cab Bus.

  2. Once it powers up, release the button.

  3. The display will show your current Cab Address.

    • To make no changes, press ENTER.

    • To assign a new ID, enter the desired number and press ENTER.

    • To reset to factory defaults, enter 00, then press ENTER again.

That’s it! Your throttle now has a new address and is ready to run trains independently on your NCE system.

💡 Pro Tips

  • Always label your throttles with their Cab ID — a small piece of masking tape or label maker tag does wonders.

  • When adding new throttles or devices (USB interface, AIU, etc.), check for conflicts with existing IDs.

  • If you experience strange control issues, resetting the throttle (using ID 00) often clears up the problem.
