The Diesel That Changed Railroading
Introduced by Electro-Motive Division (EMD) in the early 1940s, the FT proved that diesel-electric locomotives could successfully replace steam locomotives in heavy road freight service. Railroads across North America quickly embraced the design, leading to widespread dieselization throughout the following decades. Featuring the unmistakable bulldog nose that would define generations of EMD locomotives, the FT became one of the most influential diesel locomotives in railroad history.
Most prototype FTs operated as semi-permanently coupled A+B sets, delivering 2,700 horsepower while hauling priority freight, merchandise trains and heavy mainline traffic. Their success paved the way for the legendary F-series locomotives that followed.
