The Tangent Scale Models HO Scale Southern SOU #42413 Greenville 86' Quad Plug Door Boxcar recreates one of Southern Railway's massive automotive parts boxcars in the Norfolk Southern-era “BS-84 Claytor Repaint 1987+” scheme. Although operating during the Norfolk Southern era, these cars continued to carry Southern reporting marks and were repainted in a predecessor-inspired Southern scheme, creating a distinctive appearance for late-1980s through early-2000s freight operations.
Southern's Greenville 86' Quad Plug Door Boxcars were originally built in February 1970 for specialized automotive parts service. Following the formation of Norfolk Southern, cars such as SOU #42413 continued working in automotive traffic while receiving the recognizable Claytor-era repaint. Tangent accurately reproduces the specialized cushioning, underframe, brake and truck details found on these Southern prototypes.

These specialized high-cube boxcars became an unmistakable part of automotive traffic and regularly traveled far beyond their home railroad over connecting carriers.
The BS-84 Claytor repaint makes SOU #42413 particularly interesting for Southern and Norfolk Southern modelers. Despite operating within the NS system, the car retained its Southern identity, making it a natural addition to automotive trains and manifest freights representing the transition from Southern Railway into the Norfolk Southern era.
