Introduced in the mid-1990s, the EMD SD90MAC was developed as a new generation of high-horsepower AC-traction diesel locomotive. Early locomotives were delivered with EMD's proven 710G prime mover rated at approximately 4,300 horsepower while development continued on the intended 265H engine. These 710G-powered locomotives became known by railroad-specific designations including the SD9043AC and ultimately enjoyed substantially longer service lives than many of their higher-horsepower counterparts.

Factory sound-equipped versions feature an onboard SoundTraxx Tsunami2 DCC sound decoder with dual cube speakers, precision slow-speed control and extensive programmable functions. Sound-equipped models operate on both DC and DCC layouts, with full functionality available under DCC control.
