Athearn's HO Scale FMC 4700 Covered Hopper combines prototype-specific appearance with the dependable operation expected from Athearn freight cars. Models feature highly detailed injection-molded bodies, factory-applied roof hatches and end details, wire grab irons, separately applied brake equipment, see-through etched-metal end platforms and roof walkways, and multiple outlet grate variations. Underneath, 100-ton trucks with 36-inch machined nickel-silver wheels and RP25 contours provide smooth operation, while body-mounted McHenry operating scale knuckle couplers complete the model.
The prototype FMC 4700 covered hopper was produced from 1971 through 1981 and became a popular car for grain-hauling railroads. These cars could be found operating across North American rail networks and many continued in service through later eras, making the Athearn FMC 4700 an excellent addition to layouts representing a wide range of railroad operations and time periods.
