The Tangent Scale Models HO Scale SP #616541 Greenville 86' Quad Plug Door Boxcar recreates a former Southern Pacific auto-parts car after receiving Union Pacific's distinctive “Building America” repaint. Originally part of Southern Pacific's 1970 Greenville-built fleet, these enormous high-cube boxcars continued serving the automotive industry for decades and eventually received updated Union Pacific paint while retaining their SP reporting marks.
Modeled in its 2011+ appearance, SP #616541 combines classic Southern Pacific heritage with modern Union Pacific graphics. The car retains its SP reporting marks while featuring Union Pacific stenciling, the UP shield and large “Building America” graphics. Tangent also photo-matched the individual cars in this release, reproducing road-number-specific data, delineator placement and tack board locations.

The prototype's massive 86-foot body and four plug doors provided the interior volume needed to transport lightweight but bulky automotive components between parts suppliers and assembly plants. Cars like SP #616541 became fixtures of automotive traffic and could travel extensively over Union Pacific and connecting railroads throughout North America.
The combination of Southern Pacific reporting marks and Union Pacific Building America graphics makes #616541 especially appealing for contemporary modelers. It captures the patchwork ownership and repaint history commonly seen on long-lived freight equipment while adding one of the largest and most recognizable auto-parts boxcars to an HO Scale freight roster.
