Bring classic Norfolk Southern diesel power to your HO scale railroad with the Athearn Genesis EMD GP38-2 Norfolk Southern #5013. Based on a Southern Railway heritage locomotive repainted into Norfolk Southern's early black scheme, this highly detailed Genesis model captures the distinctive appearance of a hard-working GP38-2 used in local freight, switching, yard, and road service.
Athearn has equipped NS #5013 with road-number-specific details including an all-weather window on the left side, sunshade and mirrors on the right side, and MU hose pockets on the pilots. Norfolk Southern-specific features include two Leslie RS5T horns, two firecracker antennas, non-operating long-hood walkway lights, and long-hood-forward operation. These details make the model an excellent choice for Norfolk Southern layouts representing the mid-1980s through early 1990s.
This HO scale Athearn Genesis locomotive is the standard non-sound version and is DCC ready with Athearn Quick Plug technology and a 21-pin NEM connector. The Genesis drivetrain combines a 5-pole skew-wound motor, precision-machined flywheels, and a multi-link drivetrain for smooth operation. All-wheel drive, all-wheel electrical pickup, RP25 wheel contours, and a heavy die-cast frame provide dependable performance for model railroad operators.

Prototype History
EMD introduced the GP38-2 in 1972 as part of its highly successful Dash-2 locomotive family. Powered by a 16-cylinder, non-turbocharged diesel engine producing approximately 2,000 horsepower, the GP38-2 became a favorite for freight, local, switching, yard, helper, and utility assignments. Many examples remained active for decades thanks to their straightforward design and dependable operation.
Norfolk Southern was formed in 1982 and adopted its recognizable black locomotive paint scheme with bold white markings. NS #5013 represents a Southern Railway heritage GP38-2 and features the longer radiator arrangement associated with early-production examples, making it especially appropriate for transition-era Norfolk Southern operations.
