Santa Fe EMD GP39-2 Locomotive History
The Electro-Motive Division GP39-2 was manufactured between 1974 and 1984 as a four-axle diesel-electric road switcher. Its turbocharged 12-cylinder EMD 645E3 engine produced 2,300 horsepower, providing a fuel-efficient alternative to larger six-axle and higher-horsepower diesel locomotives.
Santa Fe was one of the largest purchasers of the GP39-2. Originally acquired for fast freight service, these versatile locomotives became especially useful on local freight trains, industrial branches, and road-switching assignments throughout the railroad's system.
Athearn Genesis recreates ATSF #3621 with the distinctive early Phase I body, including the rear-mounted fuel tank, large front anticlimber, and switcher-style walkway steps characteristic of Santa Fe's original GP39-2 fleet.
