Prototype History – Bethlehem Steel F89-F Piggyback Flatcars
Beginning in the early 1960s, Bethlehem Steel manufactured more than 9,000 F89-F flatcars at its Johnstown, Pennsylvania facility. Measuring approximately 89 feet 8 inches over the strikers, these long flatcars became important equipment for transporting highway trailers, automobiles, structural steel, and other specialized freight throughout North America.
The F89-F's distinctive C-channel side sills and adaptable construction allowed railroads to modify these cars for different freight assignments over several decades. Trailer Train, now known as TTX Company, operated large fleets of these versatile flatcars in piggyback service.
Trailer Train XTTX #153162 – Four-Hitch Configuration
This model represents Trailer Train XTTX #153162, equipped with four collapsible trailer hitches for transporting various combinations of 28-foot, 40-foot, and 45-foot highway trailers. Athearn Genesis includes additional raised and lowered hitch components, allowing modelers to reproduce different trailer-loading arrangements.
These XTTX flatcars were commonly found in dedicated piggyback trains and conventional manifest freight service, making them excellent additions to layouts depicting railroad operations from the 1960s onward.
