Bethlehem Steel F89-F – An Iconic North American Flatcar

Introduced in the early 1960s, the Bethlehem Steel F89-F became one of the most recognizable long flatcars in American railroading. More than 9,000 examples were manufactured at Bethlehem Steel's Johnstown, Pennsylvania facility, measuring approximately 89 feet 8 inches over the strikers.

These versatile flatcars featured distinctive C-channel side sills and were designed to accommodate changing freight transportation requirements. While many served Trailer Train in highway trailer transportation, others were used for autorack service, structural steel loads, pipe transportation, and specialized freight assignments.

The F89-F remained a familiar sight on North American railroads for decades, making it a valuable addition to HO scale layouts depicting the 1970s through modern railroad operations.
