This highly detailed Genesis model represents Amtrak AMTK #42 in its special Veterans commemorative paint scheme, one of Amtrak's distinctive special-livery locomotives.
The prototype GE P42DC is part of the Genesis passenger locomotive family and was rated at 4,250 horsepower with a top speed of 100 mph. P42DC locomotives became a familiar sight throughout the Amtrak system, handling both short- and long-distance passenger trains across the United States.
Athearn recreates Amtrak #42 with its road-number-specific PTC antenna farm and detailed Veterans appearance. The model features a detailed cab interior with appropriate controls and seats, newly tooled illuminated number boards, LED lighting, flexible rubber MU and trainline hoses, separately applied wire handrails, an exhaust stack, photo-etched metal radiator fan grille, and extensive underframe detailing including air tanks, air lines, air filter, and air dryer.
This locomotive is DCC Ready and features Athearn Quick Plug plug-and-play technology with a 21-pin NEM decoder connector for installation of a compatible aftermarket DCC decoder. Rear marker lights are installed but are not connected on the DCC Ready version.
Underneath, Athearn's Genesis driveline combines a 5-pole skew-wound motor, precision-machined flywheels, a multi-link drivetrain, all-wheel drive, and all-wheel electrical pickup. A redesigned die-cast frame provides substantial tractive effort, while McHenry scale knuckle couplers and RP25 wheel contours complete this fully assembled, ready-to-run Amtrak locomotive.
