This highly detailed Genesis model represents Amtrak AMTK #174 wearing the modern Phase VII paint scheme, making it an excellent locomotive for modeling present-day Amtrak passenger operations.
The prototype GE P42DC is part of the Genesis passenger locomotive family and was rated at 4,250 horsepower with a top speed of 100 mph. P42DC locomotives became a familiar sight across the Amtrak system, operating both short- and long-distance passenger trains throughout the United States.
Athearn recreates Amtrak #174 with its road-number-specific as-built antenna configuration and detailed Phase VII appearance. The model features a detailed cab interior with controls and seats, newly tooled illuminated number boards, operating front and rear marker lights, LED ditch lights, flexible rubber MU and trainline hoses, separately applied wire handrails, an exhaust stack, photo-etched metal radiator fan grille, and extensive underframe detailing.
This model comes factory-equipped with a SoundTraxx Tsunami2 DCC/Sound decoder and dual round speakers for high-quality sound. It operates on both DC and DCC layouts, with engine, horn, and bell sounds available during DC operation. DCC operation provides full sound and lighting functionality, including independently controlled directional marker lights and ditch lights that alternate when the horn is activated.
Underneath, Athearn's proven Genesis driveline combines a 5-pole skew-wound motor, precision-machined flywheels, a multi-link drivetrain, all-wheel drive, and all-wheel electrical pickup. A redesigned die-cast frame provides substantial tractive effort, while McHenry scale knuckle couplers and RP25 wheel contours complete this fully assembled, ready-to-run Amtrak locomotive.
