Recreate classic Amtrak passenger operations with the Athearn Genesis HO Scale GE P42DC Amtrak Phase IV #97 – DCC Ready – ATHG81236. This highly detailed Genesis model represents Amtrak AMTK #97 wearing the distinctive Phase IV paint scheme and includes road-number-specific details appropriate for this locomotive.
The GE P42DC became one of the most recognizable locomotives in Amtrak's nationwide passenger fleet. Introduced as the successor to the P40DC, the P42DC produced 4,250 horsepower and was capable of speeds up to 100 mph. Amtrak ultimately rostered more than 200 of these Genesis-series locomotives for short- and long-distance passenger service throughout the United States.
Athearn recreates Amtrak #97 as a Phase IV repaint with its original-style nose and a road-number-specific antenna arrangement featuring large and small Sinclair antennas. Amtrak-specific details also include a 5-chime forward-facing horn and front and rear marker lights.
The Genesis model features a detailed cab interior with appropriate controls and seats, newly tooled illuminated number boards, LED lighting, flexible rubber MU and trainline hoses, separately applied wire handrails, an exhaust stack, photo-etched metal radiator fan grille, and a highly detailed underframe with air tanks, air lines, air filter, and air dryer.
This locomotive is DCC Ready with Athearn Quick Plug plug-and-play technology and a 21-pin NEM decoder connector for installation of a compatible aftermarket DCC decoder. Rear marker lights are installed but are not connected on the DCC Ready version.
Underneath, Athearn's Genesis driveline combines a 5-pole skew-wound motor, precision-machined flywheels, a multi-link drivetrain, all-wheel drive, and all-wheel electrical pickup for smooth and reliable performance. A redesigned die-cast frame provides excellent tractive effort, while McHenry scale knuckle couplers and RP25 wheel contours complete this fully assembled, ready-to-run Amtrak locomotive.
