In 2012, Norfolk Southern unveiled a fleet of 20 Heritage locomotives painted to honor predecessor railroads. The swappable alternate roof with LEADER/PTC antenna array is an especially useful feature for prototype-focused modelers. Norfolk Southern modified these Heritage locomotives during the late 2010s to accommodate Positive Train Control antennas, and Athearn includes both roof styles so the model can better represent different periods of NS #1065's service life.

This version of Norfolk Southern #1065 is factory equipped with DCC & Sound. Athearn installs an onboard SoundTraxx Tsunami2 DCC decoder with dual cube speakers, providing digital locomotive control and sound without requiring an aftermarket decoder installation. The sound-equipped locomotive operates on both conventional DC and DCC layouts, with full digital functionality available under DCC control.

EMD SD70ACe Modern Diesel Power

The prototype EMD SD70ACe was developed to meet EPA Tier II diesel locomotive emissions standards while providing the performance required for demanding freight service. The design uses a 16-cylinder diesel engine producing approximately 4,300 horsepower and AC traction technology. Its full-height nose door, rectangular windshields, large flared radiator section, rear-positioned dynamic brake equipment, and prominent inverter cabinet help give the SD70ACe its unmistakable modern appearance.
