FMC 5277 Prototype History
During the mid-1970s incentive per diem boxcar boom, brightly painted freight cars belonging to railroads and leasing fleets became increasingly common across North America. FMC (Food Machinery Corporation) was an important builder during this period, with its 50-foot outside-post, non-terminating-end boxcar design forming the basis for numerous cars constructed during the 1970s.
FMC produced these cars with different door arrangements and configurations to meet customer requirements. Their long service lives also make the FMC 5277 suitable for model railroaders representing several decades of freight operations.
