NdeM #6401 Baldwin Centipede – 1950s Appearance

The Baldwin 12-8-1500/2 Centipede represented Baldwin Locomotive Works' first serious attempt at a production road diesel. Built between 1945 and 1948, the enormous Centipede used two articulated half-frames joined near the center, with an unpowered four-wheel truck at each end helping guide the locomotive through curves.

Unlike the Pennsylvania Railroad's semi-permanently coupled Centipede pairs, NdeM operated its Centipedes as individual locomotives. A single prototype measured approximately 91.5 feet long and contained two 1,500-horsepower diesel engines, giving the locomotive approximately 3,000 horsepower. This Broadway Limited release recreates NdeM #6401 in its 1950s appearance, offering modelers a particularly unusual alternative to the better-known Pennsylvania Railroad Centipedes.
