Seaboard Air Line #4500 in the Citrus Scheme

The Baldwin 12-8-1500/2 Centipede was Baldwin Locomotive Works' ambitious attempt to establish itself in the emerging road-diesel locomotive market. Built between 1945 and 1948, the Centipede used two enormous articulated half-frames linked near the middle, while an unpowered four-wheel truck at each end helped guide the locomotive through curves.

At approximately 91.5 feet long, the individual Centipedes operated by Seaboard Air Line and NdeM were enormous machines. Each unit contained two 1,500-horsepower diesel engines, producing approximately 3,000 combined horsepower per locomotive. The abundance of axles arranged beneath the exceptionally long carbody inspired the memorable Centipede nickname.
