PRR #5820 A2 in the 5-Stripe Passenger Scheme

The Baldwin 12-8-1500/2 Centipede was Baldwin Locomotive Works' first serious attempt at a production road diesel locomotive. Built between 1945 and 1948, these enormous machines used a carbody supported by two articulated half-frames joined near the center. Unpowered four-wheel guiding trucks at each end helped guide the locomotive through curves. Individual Centipedes measured approximately 91.5 feet long, while the semi-permanently coupled pairs used by the Pennsylvania Railroad stretched approximately 183 feet.

This BLI release represents Pennsylvania Railroad #5820 as an A2 unit without Trainphone antennae. Its 5-stripe passenger decoration recalls the Centipede's original role as high-powered PRR passenger motive power and gives the locomotive a distinctly classic Pennsylvania Railroad appearance.

A Massive Baldwin Diesel for Pennsylvania Railroad Layouts

Each locomotive contained two 1,500-horsepower diesel engines, producing approximately 3,000 horsepower per unit. A paired set therefore contained four engines producing approximately 6,000 combined horsepower.
