Atlas HO Code 100 12.5° Crossing – ATL177 is a fixed track section that allows two HO scale railroad tracks to intersect at a shallow 12.5-degree angle. Featuring solid nickel silver Code 100 rail and black injection-molded plastic ties, this precision-engineered crossing is designed to integrate with Atlas HO Code 100 track for reliable operation and consistent track geometry.
Unlike a turnout or switch, a crossing does not allow a train to change from one route to another. Instead, two independent tracks pass directly across each other, with each route continuing straight through the intersection. The unusually shallow 12.5° angle makes ATL177 especially useful for track arrangements where two routes approach one another at a gradual angle.
12.5° Crossing for Double-Track Mainline Junctions
Atlas specifically identifies the 12.5° crossing as especially well suited for junctions between double-track mainlines. Its shallow geometry allows intersecting routes to cross at a much more gradual angle than the 19°, 25°, 30°, 45°, 60° and 90° crossings in the Atlas Code 100 track system.
This makes the crossing useful when designing more complex mainline junctions where maintaining flowing track geometry is important. Rather than forcing two routes into a sharp intersection, the 12.5° crossing provides a fixed shallow-angle intersection around which the surrounding trackwork can be designed.
Useful for Wyes & Complex Track Arrangements
The ATL177 can also be incorporated into a variety of more advanced HO scale track plans. Atlas notes that single-track and double-track wyes, along with many other track arrangements, can be constructed using this crossing geometry.
These applications make the 12.5° crossing particularly useful for model railroaders building large junctions, double-track routes, wyes or other trackwork where standard sectional track geometry needs to come together in a predictable arrangement.
