What Is Rerailer Track?

A rerailer is a specially designed track section that helps guide locomotive and rolling stock wheels toward their proper position on the rails. Raised guidance surfaces between and alongside the rails help direct wheelsets into alignment as equipment moves across the section.

Unlike a separate handheld rerailing tool, ATL471 is an actual piece of True-Track installed directly into the layout. Once installed, trains can operate across it like another track section while receiving the benefit of its rerailing geometry.

Useful for Placing Trains on the Track

Rerailer track can also make it easier to place locomotives and rolling stock onto a layout. Instead of individually aligning every wheel precisely over the rails, equipment can be positioned over the rerailer and gently moved across the section so the wheelsets are guided toward the rails.

This can be especially convenient when placing longer locomotives, passenger cars or strings of freight cars onto the railroad.

Where Should Rerailer Track Be Used?

Rerailer sections can be installed anywhere they fit naturally into the track plan, but they are particularly useful in locations where equipment is frequently placed onto or removed from the railroad.

More Than a Handheld Rerailer

Because ATL471 is a permanent track component, it does not need to be placed over the rails each time equipment is put onto the layout. The rerailing surfaces remain available whenever a locomotive or car passes over the section.

This makes rerailer track especially convenient on layouts where equipment is frequently changed, removed for storage or returned to the railroad for operating sessions.

Atlas HO Code 83 True-Track

Atlas True-Track combines Code 83 nickel silver rail and brown ties with integrated gray graveled roadbed. The roadbed features correctly angled shoulders for a realistic track-and-ballast appearance while retaining the convenience of an easy-to-assemble sectional track system.

True-Track can be assembled, disconnected and rearranged as a track plan changes, making it suitable for beginner layouts, temporary setups, portable railroads and permanent HO scale model railroads.
