Atlas HO Code 83 True-Track Manual Left Snap-Switch Turnout – ATL478 provides a convenient way to add a left-hand diverging route to an Atlas True-Track HO scale layout. This turnout features an attached manual switch machine, allowing the route to be changed by hand without requiring a remote switch machine or electrical turnout control.
Designed as part of the Atlas HO Code 83 True-Track system, ATL478 combines nickel silver rail and brown ties with integrated gray graveled roadbed. It is ideal for adding sidings, industrial spurs, yard tracks and other diverging routes while maintaining the ready-to-use roadbed construction of the True-Track system.

What Does a Left-Hand Turnout Do?
A turnout allows one track to divide into two possible routes. On this left-hand Snap-Switch, the diverging route branches toward the left when viewed from the single-track approach or point end of the turnout.
The points inside the turnout are moved to determine which route the train will follow. One position directs equipment along the straight route, while the other sends the train onto the left-hand diverging route.
Manual Turnout Control
ATL478 comes with a manual switch machine already attached. The turnout is thrown by hand at the track rather than being operated from a remote electrical control.
This simple operation makes the manual Snap-Switch particularly useful when the turnout is located within easy reach of the operator. It also eliminates the need to wire an electrical switch machine simply to change the turnout's route.
Where Can a Left Snap-Switch Be Used?
Turnouts are what allow a model railroad to expand beyond a simple continuous-running track plan. ATL478 can be used to create a variety of operating possibilities, including:
- Industrial sidings and spurs
- Freight yard tracks
- Passing and storage sidings
- Locomotive and engine facility tracks
- Passenger station tracks
- Staging and storage areas
- Branching routes
- Additional operating areas on True-Track layouts
Snap-Switch vs. Numbered Turnouts
An Atlas Snap-Switch is designed around sectional-track geometry, making it particularly useful when building layouts with Atlas True-Track straight and curved sections. This differs from Atlas numbered Custom-Line turnouts, such as #4, #6 and #8 turnouts, which use frog-number geometry and are commonly selected based on the desired divergence angle and track arrangement.
For a True-Track layout built primarily with sectional track, the Snap-Switch provides a straightforward way to introduce a diverging route while remaining within the True-Track system.
Manual vs. Remote Snap-Switches
The primary difference between manual and remote versions is how the turnout is operated. ATL478 is manually operated, so the operator physically throws the attached switch machine at the turnout.
A remote version allows the turnout to be controlled electrically from another location. Manual operation is often a practical choice for smaller layouts and switching areas where the turnout is located within easy reach.
Build Sidings & Industrial Spurs
A single left-hand turnout can transform a basic track plan by creating a second route. Connecting straight or curved True-Track sections to the diverging route makes it possible to construct an industrial spur, storage siding or additional operating track.
Multiple left- and right-hand turnouts can be combined to create more complex arrangements such as passing sidings, freight yards, staging tracks and switching districts.
Atlas HO Code 83 True-Track
Atlas True-Track combines Code 83 nickel silver rail and brown ties with integrated gray graveled roadbed. The roadbed features correctly angled shoulders to provide a realistic track-and-ballast appearance while retaining the convenience of an easy-to-assemble sectional track system.
True-Track is suitable for beginner layouts, temporary setups, portable railroads and permanent HO scale model railroads. Components can be combined to build anything from a simple oval to a layout featuring sidings, yards and multiple operating routes.
Removable Code 83 Track
Atlas HO True-Track uses Code 83 Snap-Track that can be removed from the molded roadbed and used separately. This provides additional flexibility if the track is later incorporated into a permanent layout using a different roadbed or scenery system.
