This turnout features an attached remote-control switch machine, allowing the operator to throw the switch and change the route from a layout control panel rather than manually operating the turnout at the track.

What Does a Left-Hand Turnout Do?

A turnout allows a single track to divide into two possible routes. On this left-hand Snap-Switch, the diverging route branches toward the left when viewed from the single-track approach or point end of the turnout.

The movable points determine which route a train follows. One position directs locomotives and rolling stock along the straight route, while the other sends them onto the left-hand diverging route.

Remote-Control Switch Machine

The defining feature of ATL480 is its attached remote-control switch machine. Once properly wired, the turnout can be electrically thrown from the layout's control panel, allowing the operator to change routes without physically reaching the switch.

This is especially useful when the turnout is located farther from the operator, inside a yard or operating area, or anywhere convenient centralized turnout control is preferred.
