Atlas HO Code 100 Remote Switch Machine – Right – ATL53 is a snap-on electrical turnout-control mechanism designed for compatible Atlas HO Code 100 Snap-Switches. It allows a compatible Atlas switch to be converted to remote operation so the turnout can be thrown electrically from a layout control panel instead of being operated directly at the track.

ATL53 is the right-hand version of the Atlas Remote Switch Machine. Its convenient snap-on design makes it useful for upgrading existing Atlas Code 100 trackwork to remote turnout control or replacing a compatible switch machine without replacing the complete track switch.

What Does a Remote Switch Machine Do?

A switch machine controls the movable points of a model railroad turnout. Moving those points determines which route a locomotive or train will follow through the switch.

With the Atlas Remote Switch Machine, this movement is electrically controlled. Once properly installed and wired, the operator can change the turnout route from a layout control panel rather than reaching over the railroad and operating the switch directly.

Designed for Atlas Code 100 Snap-Switches

Atlas specifically designed ATL53 for use with Atlas HO Code 100 Snap-Switches. The switch machine snaps onto a compatible switch to provide powered turnout operation.

This makes it a useful component for model railroaders who already have compatible Atlas Snap-Switch trackwork installed but want to add remote control without replacing the entire turnout.

Right-Hand Configuration

ATL53 is specifically the right-hand remote switch machine. Switch-machine orientation matters because the mechanism must correctly align with the turnout and its movable points.

For the opposite orientation, use the corresponding Atlas left-hand remote switch machine. Verify the required orientation of your switch before selecting a replacement or conversion switch machine.

Snap-On Installation

Atlas designed these remote switch machines to quickly and easily snap onto compatible Code 100 HO switches. This provides a straightforward way to convert compatible Atlas track switches from direct manual operation to electrical remote control.

The snap-on design is particularly useful when upgrading an existing layout because the track switch itself can remain in place while the appropriate operating mechanism is installed.

Remote Turnout Control

Once properly installed and wired, ATL53 allows the compatible turnout to be thrown from a control panel. This can be especially convenient for switches located farther from the front of the layout or in areas containing several turnouts that the operator wants to control from a central location.

Remote operation is useful for passing sidings, yards, industrial tracks, junctions and other operating areas where turnout positions may need to be changed frequently during a model railroad operating session.

Remote vs. Manual Switch Machines

A manual switch machine requires the operator to physically move a lever at the turnout, while a remote switch machine provides electrical operation so the track route can be changed from another location.

Manual operation can work well for switches located within easy reach. Remote operation is especially useful for turnouts farther from the layout edge or for model railroaders who prefer centralized control of their track switches.

Switch Machine Only – Turnout Not Included

ATL53 is the remote switch machine itself and does not include a complete track turnout. It is intended to be installed on a compatible Atlas HO Code 100 switch.

This is different from Atlas products such as complete Remote Snap-Switches, which include both the track switch and its remote-control switch machine. ATL53 is intended for replacement or conversion applications where the compatible turnout is already present.

Ideal for Layout Upgrades & Replacement

A separate remote switch machine makes it possible to upgrade or maintain compatible Atlas trackwork without replacing an otherwise usable turnout. ATL53 can be used when converting compatible trackwork to remote operation or when replacing an existing compatible right-hand remote switch machine.

This can be particularly useful on established layouts where the surrounding track has already been aligned, secured, ballasted and incorporated into finished scenery.
