Atlas HO Code 83 18" Radius Remote Snap-Switch – Left – ATL540 is a complete left-hand HO scale turnout featuring 18" radius Snap-Switch geometry and an attached remote-control switch machine. Designed for Atlas Code 83 track layouts, it allows trains to continue along the main route or diverge onto a siding, passing track, yard lead or other secondary route.
Unlike a separate switch machine, ATL540 includes the complete track switch and remote operating mechanism. The attached switch machine can be wired for electrical operation, allowing the turnout to be thrown from a control panel rather than requiring the operator to reach the switch itself.
18" Radius Snap-Switch Geometry
Atlas designed this Snap-Switch around 18" radius sectional-track geometry. This is important because a Snap-Switch is different from a numbered Customline turnout such as a #4, #6 or #8 turnout.
The curved route follows 18" radius geometry, making ATL540 particularly useful for compact HO layouts and sectional-track plans built around 18" radius curves. Always verify the minimum recommended radius of your locomotives and rolling stock before using 18" radius track.
Included 1/3 18" Radius Section
Atlas includes a 1/3 18" radius curved track section with the Snap-Switch. When used with the turnout, this additional section makes the curved leg equivalent to a standard 18" radius curved section.
This helps the switch integrate into Atlas sectional-track geometry without requiring the modeler to create the complete diverging curve from flex track.
Add a Passing Track or Siding
Atlas specifically designed its Snap-Switch geometry to make adding a passing track or siding straightforward. According to Atlas, a Snap-Switch can replace a 9" straight track section when adding a passing track or siding to an existing track arrangement.
When replacing an 18" radius curved section with an Atlas Snap-Switch, Atlas recommends adding a 1-1/2" straight track section to the opposite side to maintain the intended sectional-track geometry.
Left-Hand Turnout
ATL540 is the left-hand version. When approaching the turnout from the single-track or point end, the diverging route branches toward the left while the other route continues through the switch.
Left- and right-hand orientation should be selected according to the direction in which the siding, passing track or secondary route needs to branch from the main track.
Remote-Control Switch Machine Included
ATL540 comes with a remote-control switch machine attached. Once properly wired, the turnout can be thrown electrically from a layout control panel rather than manually at the track.
Remote operation is especially convenient for turnouts located farther from the layout edge, passing sidings, yards and layouts where multiple switches are operated from a centralized control location.
Plastic Frog
This Snap-Switch uses a plastic frog that cannot be electrically powered. The frog is the area where the rails of the two turnout routes cross one another.
Because the frog itself is not powered, reliable electrical pickup through the turnout depends partly on the wheelbase and pickup arrangement of the locomotive being operated. This is worth considering when operating particularly short locomotives at very low speeds.

Snap-Switch vs. Numbered Turnout
An Atlas Snap-Switch should not be confused with a numbered Customline turnout. Numbered turnouts use frog geometry identified by numbers such as #4, #6 or #8, while the Snap-Switch is designed around sectional-track curve geometry.
ATL540 uses an 18" radius diverging route, making it particularly convenient for layouts designed with Atlas sectional track and compact 18" radius curves.
Atlas Code 83 Construction
Atlas HO Code 83 track features nickel silver rail and prototypically fine brown ties for a more realistic HO scale appearance. Code 83 rail is approximately 0.083" high, providing a finer rail profile than traditional Code 100 track.
Test Before Ballasting
Before permanently securing or ballasting the turnout, test the remote switch machine and verify that the points move completely into both positions. Run locomotives and rolling stock through both routes to confirm reliable mechanical and electrical operation.
Testing is especially important with the 18" radius diverging route, as longer locomotives and rolling stock may require broader minimum-radius trackwork.
