Atlas HO Code 83 18" Radius Manual Snap-Switch – Left – ATL542 is a complete left-hand HO scale turnout designed for simple manual, hand-operated switching. Using Atlas Snap-Switch geometry, it provides a convenient way to branch from a main track into a siding, passing track, yard track or other secondary route while integrating with Atlas HO Code 83 trackwork.
Unlike the remote version, ATL542 does not require electrical operation to change routes. The turnout is thrown directly by hand using its manual lever, making it an excellent choice for switches located within easy reach of the operator.
Manual Snap-Switch Operation
Atlas defines a manual switch as one that is thrown by flipping the lever on the switch by hand. Moving the lever changes the position of the turnout points and determines which route the train follows.
This straightforward operation makes manual Snap-Switches especially useful on smaller layouts, switching layouts, industrial areas and other locations where the turnout is easily accessible.
18" Radius Snap-Switch Geometry
Atlas Snap-Switches use 18" radius sectional-track geometry rather than the numbered frog geometry found on Customline #4, #6 or #8 turnouts.
This makes the Snap-Switch particularly useful for compact HO scale track plans built around 18" radius curves. Because the diverging route uses relatively tight 18" radius geometry, check the minimum recommended radius of your locomotives and rolling stock when planning your layout.
Left-Hand Turnout
ATL542 is the left-hand version. When approaching from the single-track or point end of the turnout, the diverging route branches toward the left.
Left- and right-hand switches allow modelers to choose the direction in which a siding, passing track, industrial spur or secondary route branches from the approaching track.
Manual Now, Remote Later
One useful feature of the Atlas Code 83 Manual Snap-Switch is the ability to convert it to remote operation later. Atlas specifies that its manual Code 83 Snap-Switches can be converted using the appropriate Atlas remote switch machine.
This gives modelers the option of starting with simple manual turnout control and upgrading to electrical remote operation as the layout develops.
Plastic Frog
ATL542 uses a plastic frog that cannot be electrically powered. The frog is the portion of the turnout where the rails of the two routes cross.
Because the frog itself is not powered, modelers operating particularly short locomotives at very low speeds should consider the locomotive's electrical pickup arrangement when planning operations through the turnout.

Manual vs. Remote Snap-Switch
The primary difference between manual and remote Atlas Snap-Switches is how the turnout points are operated. ATL542 is changed directly by hand at the turnout, while a remote Snap-Switch uses an electrical switch machine that allows the operator to change routes from another location.
Manual operation keeps installation simple when the turnout is within easy reach. Remote operation can be more convenient for switches farther from the layout edge or layouts using centralized turnout controls.
Snap-Switch vs. Numbered Turnout
An Atlas Snap-Switch is different from a numbered Customline turnout. Customline turnouts are identified by frog numbers such as #4, #6 or #8, while the Snap-Switch is designed around sectional-track curve geometry.
ATL542 uses 18" radius geometry, making it particularly convenient for compact Atlas sectional-track layouts and track plans incorporating 18" radius curves.
Atlas HO Code 83 Construction
Atlas HO Code 83 track features nickel silver rail and prototypically fine brown ties for a realistic HO scale appearance. The finer Code 83 rail profile provides a more scale-appropriate appearance than traditional Code 100 track while maintaining the reliability Atlas track is known for.
Test Before Ballasting
Before permanently securing or ballasting the turnout, operate the manual lever several times and verify that the turnout points move completely into both positions. Run locomotives and rolling stock through both turnout routes to check track alignment and reliable operation.
Testing is particularly important on the 18" radius diverging route because longer locomotives and rolling stock may require broader minimum-radius trackwork.
