Atlas HO Code 83 22" Radius Manual Snap-Switch – Right – ATL545 is a right-hand HO scale track switch featuring 22" radius geometry and manual turnout operation. Designed for Atlas HO Code 83 track layouts, this switch provides a convenient way to branch from one track into a siding, passing track, yard lead or other secondary route.
The broader 22" radius geometry makes ATL545 especially useful for model railroaders who want a more generous diverging curve than the tighter 18" radius geometry found on other Atlas Snap-Switches.
22" Radius Turnout Geometry
The defining feature of ATL545 is its 22" radius curved route. A larger curve radius provides a broader, more gradual path through the turnout than an 18" radius switch.
This can be particularly useful when operating longer locomotives and rolling stock or when building an HO layout around broader-radius curves. Always check the manufacturer's minimum-radius recommendation for your specific locomotives and rolling stock.
Why Choose a 22" Radius Snap-Switch?
A 22" radius Snap-Switch can help maintain broader track geometry when a siding or secondary route branches from the main track. Compared with an 18" radius switch, the broader curve provides a less severe change in direction through the diverging route.
ATL545 is well suited to passing sidings, yard entrances, industrial leads, branch routes and other track arrangements where sufficient layout space is available for broader-radius trackwork.
Right-Hand Configuration
ATL545 is the right-hand version. When approaching the turnout from the single-track or point end, the diverging route branches toward the right.
Choose the turnout orientation according to the direction your siding, passing track, yard track or secondary route needs to branch from the approaching track. For a route that branches toward the left, use the corresponding left-hand 22" radius Snap-Switch.
Manual Turnout Operation
ATL545 is the manual version of the Atlas 22" radius Snap-Switch. Manual operation is a straightforward choice for turnouts positioned within easy reach of the operator and avoids the need for electrical remote turnout control.
Manual switches are especially practical for smaller layouts, switching layouts, yards and industrial areas where operators regularly work close to the track.

22" Radius vs. 18" Radius
The primary advantage of a 22" radius turnout compared with an 18" radius turnout is the broader curve through the diverging route. Increasing the radius reduces the severity of the curve and can provide a better match for layouts already designed around 22" radius or similarly broad track geometry.
The broader radius also requires additional layout space, so the best turnout depends on your available area and the minimum-radius requirements of the locomotives and rolling stock you plan to operate.
Snap-Switch vs. Numbered Turnout
An Atlas Snap-Switch is different from a numbered Customline turnout. Numbered turnouts are identified by frog numbers such as #4, #6 or #8, while ATL545 is identified by its 22" radius curved geometry.
This makes the 22" radius Snap-Switch particularly useful when designing trackwork around sectional curve geometry rather than numbered turnout geometry.
Atlas HO Code 83 Construction
Atlas HO Code 83 track features prototypically fine brown ties and nickel silver rail, providing a realistic appearance for HO scale model railroad trackwork.
Code 83 uses a finer rail profile than traditional Code 100 track, making it a popular choice for model railroaders seeking more scale-appropriate track appearance.
Plan Your Turnout Location
Because ATL545 uses 22" radius geometry, allow sufficient space for the curved route and adjoining track when planning its location. The broader radius occupies more room than an 18" radius switch but provides a gentler path through the diverging route.
Before permanently securing and ballasting the switch, connect the surrounding track and test locomotives and rolling stock through both routes. Check turnout operation, track alignment and equipment clearance while adjustments are still easy to make.
