Atlas HO Code 83 22" Radius Remote Snap-Switch – Left – ATL546 is a left-hand HO scale track switch combining broader 22" radius geometry with remote turnout operation. Designed for Atlas HO Code 83 track layouts, this switch provides a convenient way to branch from one route into a siding, passing track, yard lead or other secondary track while allowing the turnout to be controlled remotely.
The 22" radius geometry provides a broader diverging route than the tighter 18" radius geometry used by other Atlas Snap-Switches, making ATL546 a useful choice for layouts designed around more generous HO scale curves.
22" Radius Turnout Geometry
The defining feature of ATL546 is its 22" radius curved route. Compared with an 18" radius switch, the larger radius creates a broader and more gradual path through the diverging route.
This can be especially useful when operating longer locomotives and rolling stock or when designing a layout around broader-radius curves. Always check the manufacturer's minimum-radius recommendation for your specific locomotives and rolling stock.
Why Choose a 22" Radius Snap-Switch?
A 22" radius Snap-Switch helps maintain broader track geometry when branching into a siding or secondary route. The gentler curve can provide a better match for HO layouts already using 22" radius or similarly broad curves.
ATL546 is well suited for passing sidings, yard entrances, industrial leads, branch routes and other track arrangements where sufficient layout space is available for broader-radius trackwork.
Left-Hand Configuration
ATL546 is the left-hand version. When approaching the turnout from the single-track or point end, the diverging route branches toward the left.
Choose left- or right-hand orientation according to the direction your siding, passing track, yard lead or secondary route needs to branch from the approaching track.
Remote Turnout Operation
ATL546 is the remote version of the Atlas 22" radius left-hand Snap-Switch. Remote turnout control allows the switch to be operated from another location on the layout rather than requiring the operator to manually change the route directly at the track.
This is particularly convenient for switches located farther from the layout edge, larger layouts, passing sidings, yards and model railroads where multiple turnouts are controlled from a central location.

Remote vs. Manual 22" Radius Snap-Switch
The primary difference between remote and manual versions is how the turnout is operated. A manual switch is changed directly at the track, while ATL546 provides remote operation for more convenient control from another location on the layout.
Remote operation can be especially useful when the switch is beyond comfortable reach or when a layout is designed around centralized turnout controls. For easily accessible locations where simple hand operation is preferred, a manual 22" radius Snap-Switch may be the better choice.
22" Radius vs. 18" Radius
The primary advantage of a 22" radius turnout compared with an 18" radius turnout is the broader curve through the diverging route. Increasing the radius reduces the severity of the curve and can provide a better match for layouts designed around broader-radius trackwork.
The 22" radius also requires additional layout space, so turnout selection should consider both the available area and the minimum-radius requirements of the equipment you plan to operate.
Snap-Switch vs. Numbered Turnout
An Atlas Snap-Switch is different from a numbered Customline turnout. Numbered turnouts are identified by frog numbers such as #4, #6 or #8, while ATL546 is identified by its 22" radius curved geometry.
This makes the 22" radius Snap-Switch particularly useful when designing trackwork around sectional curve geometry rather than numbered turnout geometry.
Atlas HO Code 83 Construction
Atlas HO Code 83 track features prototypically fine brown ties and nickel silver rail, providing realistic proportions and appearance for HO scale model railroad trackwork.
Code 83 uses a finer rail profile than traditional Code 100 track, making it a popular choice for model railroaders seeking more scale-appropriate track appearance.
Plan & Test Your Turnout
Because ATL546 uses 22" radius geometry, allow sufficient room for the diverging route and adjoining track when planning its location. The broader radius occupies more space than an 18" radius switch but provides a gentler curved route.
Before permanently securing and ballasting the turnout, test its operation and run locomotives and rolling stock through both routes. Verify smooth turnout movement, track alignment and equipment clearance while adjustments are still easy to make.
