Manual vs. Remote Switch Machines

A manual switch machine is operated directly by hand at the turnout, while a remote switch machine allows the turnout to be operated electrically from another location on the layout.

Manual control keeps installation simple and is often ideal for switches within easy reach. Remote control can be preferable for turnouts farther from the layout edge or layouts where centralized control-panel operation is desired.
