Atlas HO/N Scale Under-Table Switch Machine – ATL65 provides a clean way to operate model railroad turnouts while keeping the switch machine hidden beneath the layout. Instead of mounting the operating mechanism alongside the track, ATL65 installs below the layout surface and operates the turnout from underneath, helping preserve a more realistic appearance around visible trackwork.
Atlas designed this versatile switch machine for use with all Atlas HO switches as well as many other HO scale switches. It can also be used with many N Scale Code 80 switches, making ATL65 a useful turnout-control component for a wide variety of model railroad track arrangements.
What Does an Under-Table Switch Machine Do?
A switch machine moves the points of a model railroad turnout between its available routes. With an under-table switch machine, the operating mechanism is mounted below the layout rather than alongside the turnout.
This allows the turnout to be controlled while keeping the bulky operating mechanism out of the visible scene. For finished layouts where realistic-looking trackwork is important, under-table operation can provide a much cleaner appearance than a surface-mounted switch machine.
Hidden Beneath the Layout
The primary advantage of ATL65 is its below-layout installation. Atlas specifically designed the switch machine to hide underneath the layout so the turnout can be thrown without the switch machine being visible next to the track.
This is especially useful for highly detailed areas such as mainlines, yards, passenger terminals, industrial districts and scenic sections where a surface-mounted operating mechanism could detract from the appearance of the trackwork.
Compatible with Atlas HO Switches
Atlas specifies that the ATL65 Under-Table Switch Machine can be used with all Atlas HO switches, making it a versatile turnout-control option across Atlas HO track systems.
This makes ATL65 particularly useful for model railroaders using multiple types of Atlas turnouts throughout a layout who want to maintain a consistent under-table turnout-control system.
HO & N Scale Applications
Although commonly used as an HO scale switch machine, ATL65 is not limited exclusively to HO layouts. Atlas also specifies compatibility with many other HO switches and N Scale Code 80 switches.
Always verify the installation requirements of the specific turnout and track system before mounting the switch machine, particularly when using ATL65 with non-Atlas track components.

Why Use an Under-Table Switch Machine?
Surface-mounted switch machines are convenient, but they remain visible alongside the track. Installing the operating mechanism underneath the layout helps keep attention on the track, ballast and surrounding scenery instead of the turnout-control hardware.
This can be particularly valuable on finished scenic layouts, photography-oriented model railroads and highly visible mainline or terminal areas where realistic presentation is a priority.
Plan Your Installation Before Ballasting
Because ATL65 mounts below the layout and mechanically operates the turnout above it, plan the switch machine location while installing your trackwork. Make sure the area beneath the turnout remains accessible and that the switch machine can be properly aligned with the turnout's operating mechanism.
Testing turnout movement before permanently securing, ballasting or finishing the surrounding scenery can make installation and adjustment considerably easier.
