Atlas HO Code 100 Rerailer Track – 3-Pack – ATL844 includes three rerailer track sections designed to help guide HO scale locomotive and rolling stock wheels into proper alignment with the rails. These useful track sections can be incorporated directly into an Atlas Code 100 layout, providing convenient rerailing points while functioning as part of the railroad's regular trackwork.
Rerailers are particularly useful in locations where trains are frequently placed onto the layout or where additional assistance keeping wheels properly aligned with the rails is beneficial. Each section features solid nickel silver Code 100 rail with black injection-molded plastic ties, matching Atlas' traditional HO Code 100 track system.
What Does a Rerailer Track Do?
A rerailer incorporates a molded guide area between and alongside the rails. When properly positioned wheels pass through the section, the track functions normally. If a wheel is slightly out of alignment, the rerailer's guide surfaces are designed to help direct it back toward the proper position on the rails.
This makes a rerailer different from an ordinary straight track section. While it still forms part of the train's route, it provides an additional wheel-guiding and rerailing function.
Convenient for Putting Trains on the Track
Rerailer sections can also make it easier to place locomotives and rolling stock onto an HO scale railroad. Instead of carefully aligning every wheel directly over the rails, the rerailer provides a convenient location where wheels can be positioned and guided into proper alignment.
This can be especially helpful with longer passenger cars, locomotives with multiple axles, freight cars in long trains and other equipment where manually aligning every wheel can be tedious.
Where Should Rerailers Be Used?
Because rerailers function as part of the track itself, they can be incorporated at useful locations around a layout. Common locations include staging areas, yards, locomotive facilities and other places where trains are frequently handled or placed onto the rails.
A rerailer can also be installed along accessible sections of a mainline or other track where its wheel-guiding function may be useful.

Rerailers Are Helpful — But Trackwork Still Matters
A rerailer can help guide slightly misaligned wheels, but it should not be used to compensate for poorly installed track or equipment that regularly derails. Consistent derailments should be investigated for issues such as track alignment, rail joints, wheel gauge, coupler problems or equipment that is being operated on curves or turnouts outside its recommended limits.
Used correctly, rerailers provide an additional layer of convenience while maintaining normal operation through the track section.
