Santa Fe created the CF7 by rebuilding aging F-unit locomotives into practical road-switchers at its Cleburne Shops. Beginning in 1969, the program ultimately produced more than 200 locomotives with GP-style hoods, substantial side sills and a variety of cab configurations. Their long secondary careers eventually took many CF7s far beyond Santa Fe, including into Amtrak non-revenue service.
