EMD GP40 Prototype History

Introduced in 1965, the EMD GP40 was a 3,000-horsepower, four-axle diesel-electric locomotive powered by the turbocharged EMD 16-645E3 engine. It was designed for fast freight and general road service, offering railroads an excellent balance of horsepower, speed, and operational flexibility.

More than 1,000 GP40 locomotives were produced before the GP40-2 succeeded the original design in 1971. Their versatility helped them remain active for decades, with many eventually rebuilt or transferred to regional and shortline operators.
