Their distinctive bi-level arrangement featured upper seating galleries overlooking the center aisle, allowing conductors to check tickets throughout the car from the lower level.

Following the formation of Burlington Northern in 1970, these stainless steel gallery cars continued serving Chicago-area commuters. Many were later converted to head-end power (HEP), replacing their original steam-heating systems with electric heating and updated lighting. These cars remained a familiar sight throughout the Burlington Northern commuter era.
