The Tangent Scale Models HO Scale Southern SOU #42414 Greenville 86' Quad Plug Door Boxcar recreates one of Southern Railway's enormous automotive parts cars in its distinctive as-built February 1970 brown delivery scheme. Built for specialized auto-parts service, these 86-foot high-cube boxcars combined tremendous interior volume with four large plug doors to handle bulky automotive components moving between assembly plants and suppliers.
Southern's prototype cars were assigned to the GM automotive parts pool serving Lansing, Michigan on the Grand Trunk Western. The as-delivered appearance is particularly distinctive, featuring the “SOUTHERN GIVES A GREEN LIGHT TO INNOVATIONS” slogan along with the car number and CAPY data positioned on the center panels. The right side also carries prominent “SUPER CUSHION SERVICE” lettering, giving SOU #42414 an unmistakable early-1970s Southern appearance.
