History of the Sukhoi Su-27 Flanker B

The Sukhoi Su-27 Flanker was developed by the Soviet Union as a fourth-generation fighter aircraft designed for long-range interception and air superiority. Entering operational service during the 1980s, the Su-27 was developed to counter advanced American aircraft such as the F-15 Eagle.

Powered by two Saturn AL-31F turbofan engines, the Su-27 combines impressive speed, range, and maneuverability. Its large blended wing and fuselage design, twin vertical stabilizers, and advanced flight controls helped establish the aircraft as one of the most recognizable military fighters of the late Cold War era.

The Su-27 also gained international attention for its remarkable aerobatic capabilities, including the famous Pugachev's Cobra maneuver. Its design became the foundation for numerous later Sukhoi fighter aircraft, including the Su-30, Su-33, and Su-35.
