What Does a Manual Switch Machine Do?

A switch machine operates the movable points of a model railroad turnout. Moving those points changes which route a locomotive or train follows through the switch.

With a manual switch machine, the operator changes the turnout position directly at the track. No remote electrical control is required, making manual operation a simple choice for switches located within comfortable reach.

Right-Hand Configuration

ATL587 is specifically the right-hand version of the Atlas HO Code 83 Manual Switch Machine. Switch-machine orientation is important because the mechanism must correctly align with the turnout it operates.

If you are replacing an existing switch machine, verify that your turnout requires the right-hand configuration before installation. For the opposite orientation, use the corresponding Atlas left-hand manual switch machine.

Simple Manual Turnout Control

Manual switch machines work especially well for yards, industrial switching areas, sidings, smaller layouts and other easily accessible track locations. The operator can change routes directly at the turnout without installing wiring for remote turnout operation.

For switches located farther from the layout edge or where centralized turnout control is preferred, an appropriate Atlas remote switch machine may be a better choice.

Manual vs. Remote Switch Machines

A manual switch machine is operated directly at the turnout, while a remote switch machine provides electrical operation from another location on the layout.

Manual operation keeps turnout control simple and is particularly useful when the track switch is easily accessible. Remote operation is generally more convenient for difficult-to-reach switches or layouts using centralized controls.

Switch Machine Only – Turnout Not Included

ATL587 is the manual switch machine itself and does not include a complete turnout or track switch. It is intended for model railroaders who need the turnout operating mechanism separately.

This makes ATL587 useful when replacing a compatible existing manual switch machine without replacing otherwise usable trackwork.

Test Your Turnout Before Ballasting

After installation, verify that the switch machine moves the turnout points completely between both positions. Test locomotives and rolling stock through both turnout routes before permanently ballasting or finishing the surrounding trackwork.

Testing the mechanism while the track remains easily accessible makes any necessary alignment or operating adjustments much easier.
