Atlas HO Code 83 Custom-Line Mark IV Curved Turnout – Left – ATL595 is a specialized curved HO scale track switch that allows a train to diverge from one curved route onto another without first transitioning to straight track. Featuring a 22" inside radius and 30" outside radius, this turnout is ideal for fitting sidings, junctions, yard entrances and other complex track arrangements into locations where a conventional straight turnout would require additional space.
Unlike a standard turnout with one straight route and one diverging route, both routes through ATL595 are curved. This makes curved turnouts especially valuable when designing trackwork around existing curves or when maximizing usable layout space is important.
22" Inner & 30" Outer Radius
Atlas specifies the geometry of ATL595 with a 22" inside radius and 30" outside radius. The two different radii allow one curved route to separate from the other while both continue through the turnout on a curve.
The 22" inside route is the tighter curve, while the 30" outside route provides the broader path. This geometry can be particularly useful for curved passing sidings, yard approaches, industrial leads, station approaches and junctions positioned within a sweeping curve.
Because the two routes have different radii, check the minimum-radius requirements of the locomotives and rolling stock that will use each route, particularly equipment traveling through the tighter 22" radius path.
Why Use a Curved Turnout?
A conventional turnout generally requires a section of relatively straight track before routes begin to separate. A curved turnout allows the route division to occur while the track is already curving, opening up track-planning possibilities that can be difficult to achieve with standard turnouts.
ATL595 can be especially useful for:
- Curved passing sidings
- Yard entrances located on curves
- Industrial and branch-line junctions
- Station approaches
- Engine terminal approaches
- Curved mainline junctions
- Space-conscious track arrangements
- Locations where a straight turnout would disrupt the desired track alignment
Left-Hand Curved Turnout
ATL595 is the left-hand version of the Atlas Code 83 Custom-Line curved turnout. Because both routes are curved, left/right orientation on a curved turnout is best considered in relation to the turnout's overall geometry rather than treating it exactly like a conventional straight turnout.
Carefully plan the orientation of the turnout and adjoining track before permanent installation to ensure the 22" inner and 30" outer routes align with the intended track arrangement.
Die-Cast Points
Atlas equips this Custom-Line Mark IV curved turnout with die-cast switch points. The points direct equipment between the two curved routes and form an important part of the turnout's mechanical and electrical operation.
Before permanent installation, verify that the points move freely and seat properly against the appropriate stock rails in both positions.
Isolated Die-Cast Frog with Power Contact
ATL595 features an isolated die-cast frog with a power contact. Atlas designed the frog so it can optionally be energized, helping maintain electrical pickup as locomotives travel through the frog area.
This can be particularly valuable during slow-speed operation, where maintaining dependable electrical contact through complex turnout trackwork is important.
Manual or Remote Operation
Atlas identifies ATL595 as a Custom-Line Mark IV turnout that can be configured for either manual or remote operation depending on the compatible switch machine selected by the modeler.
This allows the turnout to be incorporated into layouts ranging from manually operated switching areas to layouts using electrically controlled turnouts from a control panel or other control system.

Curved Turnout vs. Standard Turnout
The key difference between ATL595 and a conventional #4, #6 or #8 turnout is the shape of the routes. A standard numbered turnout typically provides a straight route with a diverging route branching away from it. With this curved turnout, both routes follow curved alignments.
That makes ATL595 a specialized track-planning component rather than simply another turnout size. It can allow a siding or secondary route to begin within an existing curve, potentially reducing the amount of layout space needed to achieve the desired track arrangement.
22" vs. 30" Radius Routes
The 22" radius route is considerably tighter than the 30" radius route. When planning the turnout location, consider which equipment will regularly travel over each path.
The broader 30" route provides more generous curvature for longer equipment, while the 22" route allows the turnout to maintain a significantly more compact inner alignment. Always verify equipment minimum-radius requirements rather than assuming every HO scale locomotive or car will comfortably negotiate both routes.
Atlas HO Code 83 Construction
Atlas HO Code 83 track uses nickel silver rail with prototypically fine brown ties, providing a finer and more scale-appropriate rail profile than traditional Code 100 track while maintaining dependable operation for HO scale layouts.
The realistic tie appearance and fine rail profile make Code 83 particularly well suited to permanent layouts where both appearance and reliable operation are priorities.
Plan & Test Before Permanent Installation
Curved turnouts require especially careful installation because track alignment through both curved routes directly affects operation. Avoid forcing adjoining flex track into an unnatural alignment or introducing a kink immediately before or after the turnout.
Before securing and ballasting ATL595, test representative locomotives and rolling stock through both the 22" and 30" radius routes in both directions. Verify point movement, wheel tracking, electrical continuity and equipment clearance while adjustments can still be made easily.
