Atlas HO/N Scale Deluxe Under-Table Switch Machine with DPDT Relay – ATL66 provides hidden turnout operation from beneath the layout while adding the versatility of a built-in double-pole, double-throw (DPDT) relay with actuating mechanism. Designed for use with most Atlas and many other HO and N scale switches, ATL66 is an excellent choice for model railroaders who want cleaner-looking trackwork combined with additional electrical control capabilities.
Because the switch machine mounts underneath the layout, the operating mechanism remains out of sight instead of sitting alongside the track. This helps create a more realistic appearance around turnouts while still providing powered turnout operation.
What Makes the Deluxe Switch Machine Different?
The major difference between the Atlas Deluxe Under-Table Switch Machine and a basic under-table switch machine is the Deluxe model's integrated double-pole, double-throw relay.
The DPDT relay provides two electrically switched circuits that operate in conjunction with the switch machine. This gives model railroaders additional options for controlling electrical functions associated with the position of the turnout.
Built-In DPDT Relay
ATL66 includes a DPDT relay with an actuating mechanism. DPDT stands for double-pole, double-throw, meaning the relay can switch two separate electrical circuits between two positions.
On a model railroad, this additional electrical switching capability can be useful when a secondary circuit needs to change state along with the turnout position. The exact wiring and application will depend on the layout's electrical and control system.
Hidden Under-Table Installation
The ATL66 switch machine installs beneath the layout surface, allowing the turnout above to operate without a large surface-mounted switch machine beside the track.
Keeping the mechanism below the layout can significantly improve the appearance of visible trackwork, particularly around mainlines, passenger terminals, yards, industrial districts and heavily scenicked areas.
Compatible with HO & N Scale Switches
Atlas specifies that the Deluxe Under-Table Switch Machine can be used with most Atlas and many other HO and N scale switches. This makes ATL66 a versatile turnout-control component for model railroaders using a variety of track systems.
When installing the machine with a specific turnout or non-Atlas track system, verify the turnout's mechanical requirements and installation arrangement before permanently mounting the switch machine.

Standard vs. Deluxe Atlas Under-Table Switch Machine
For model railroaders who simply need hidden turnout operation, a standard under-table switch machine provides a straightforward solution. The Deluxe ATL66 adds an integrated DPDT relay, making it the more versatile choice when the turnout position also needs to control additional electrical functions.
If those additional contacts are not required, the standard under-table switch machine may be sufficient. When additional electrical switching is part of the layout design, the Deluxe model provides that capability in the same turnout-control installation.
Useful for Advanced Layout Wiring
The built-in relay makes ATL66 particularly useful on layouts where turnout position is incorporated into the electrical control system. Because the relay provides two switched circuits, it offers considerably more flexibility than a switch machine designed only to move the turnout points.
The exact use of those contacts should be determined by the modeler's wiring plan and the requirements of the connected equipment.
Plan Installation Before Ballasting
Because ATL66 mounts beneath the layout and mechanically operates the turnout above it, plan the installation while laying track whenever possible. Make sure there is adequate clearance beneath the turnout and that the switch machine can be properly aligned with the turnout's operating mechanism.
Test the turnout through both routes and verify proper switch-machine and relay operation before permanently securing, ballasting or finishing the surrounding trackwork.
