Viewliner sleeping cars were developed during the late 1980s to replace Amtrak's aging heritage passenger equipment. Designed as single-level cars primarily for eastern routes where tunnel clearances limited taller equipment, production Viewliner I sleepers entered service in 1995. Their distinctive double rows of windows and accommodations for roomettes, bedrooms and an accessible bedroom make the Viewliner I an important part of Amtrak's long-distance passenger fleet.

This WalthersProto HO scale model captures the prototype with a full interior, improved diaphragms, factory-installed wire grab irons and a detailed underbody.
