Busy urban grade crossings required employees to watch for approaching trains and help protect road traffic. An elevated tower provided a clear view along the tracks and across surrounding streets while occupying relatively little ground space. These small but important structures were especially useful near passenger terminals, industrial districts, and other locations where frequent train movements crossed heavily traveled roads.
