About USS Blue Ridge (LCC-19)
USS Blue Ridge (LCC-19) was commissioned on November 14, 1970, at the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard. Designed as one of the most sophisticated command and control platforms in the U.S. Navy, the ship displaces approximately 18,000 tons, measures 196 meters in length, has a 33-meter beam, and is capable of speeds up to 23 knots.
From 1971 through 1979, USS Blue Ridge operated out of San Diego, California, regularly deploying to the Western Pacific. During this period, the ship earned both the Meritorious Unit Commendation and the Navy Unit Commendation for her role in the evacuation of Saigon in 1975.
In October 1979, USS Blue Ridge became forward deployed to Japan, where she has since served as the flagship of the Commander, U.S. Seventh Fleet. The ship also played a key role as flagship for Commander, United States Naval Forces Central Command during Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm (1990–1991).
Notably, USS Blue Ridge conducted a historic port visit to Shanghai, People’s Republic of China, in May 1989, highlighting her importance in U.S. naval diplomacy and forward presence operations.
