Specially designed to speed the loading and unloading of building materials, prototype centerbeam flatcars have been a common sight on North American railroads since the 1980s and remain an important part of modern freight operations.

The distinctive center partition helps stabilize loads of dimensional lumber, plywood and other packaged building products while allowing loading and unloading from either side of the car. Prototype cars were constructed in multiple configurations, including the distinctive "opera window" design with oval openings and the more conventional standard centerbeam design using steel beams and rigging. WalthersMainline reproduces the appropriate version for each road name.

Designed for dependable HO scale operation, the model features a heavy die-cast metal underframe for excellent tracking along with correct 36 scale-inch diameter RP-25 turned metal wheelsets and Proto MAX metal knuckle couplers. Its recognizable 72-foot profile makes it an excellent addition to lumber trains, building-material consists, manifest freights and industrial switching operations from the 1980s through today.
