Steam locomotives consumed enormous amounts of water, requiring railroads to install tanks at terminals, division points, small-town stations, and intermediate locations along their lines. Many tanks were positioned near depots so locomotives could refill during scheduled station stops. Remote servicing points sometimes attracted stores, homes, and other development, creating communities commonly known as tank towns.
Add an Assembled HO Scale Railroad Water Tank
The Walthers Cornerstone Built-Ups Wood Water Tank arrives ready for placement and includes distinctive details for a steam-era railroad scene:
- HO scale wooden railroad water tank
- Fully assembled and decorated
- Finished in a yellow-ochre color scheme
- Based on water tanks used by North American railroads
- Suitable for early-20th-century through late-steam-era layouts
- Detailed wooden support timbers
- Realistic elevated tank construction
- Movable locomotive-filling spout
- Spout can be displayed in the raised or lowered position
- Parts finished in authentic multiple colors
- Suitable for engine terminals and servicing facilities
- Works beside small-town depots and branch-line stations
- Compact footprint fits smaller yards and trackside scenes
- Measures 3-1/2 x 3-7/8 x 6-5/8" (8.7 x 9.6 x 16.5cm)
The movable spout allows the model to represent different stages of locomotive servicing. Display it lowered over a steam locomotive tender during a water stop or raised after servicing is complete. Crews, tools, coal and sand facilities, and additional trackside details can create a more active terminal scene.
At a small-town station, the water tank can be positioned beside the main line or passing track so locomotives can refill while handling passengers and freight. A nearby depot, freight house, section shed, and several homes can transform the scene into a rural railroad community that developed around the servicing stop.
For a larger terminal, one or more tanks can support road locomotives and switchers working throughout the day. A coaling tower, sand facility, ash pit, roundhouse, or enginehouse can be added nearby to model the sequence of servicing required before a locomotive returns to duty.
Because the model is supplied fully assembled and decorated, it can be installed without a structure-building project. Optional weathering can add mineral deposits, damp wood, faded paint, soot, and signs of repeated use while retaining the factory-applied yellow-ochre finish.

For optional customization, browse Fusion Scale Hobbies' model railroad and hobby paint for mineral stains, aged wood, soot, and weathering effects. Model building glue and adhesives can be used to attach separately purchased scenic details around the completed tank; the water tank itself requires no assembly.
