Walthers Cornerstone HO Scale Bridge Crane Kit - 933-2906 creates a large material-handling structure for an HO scale waterfront, steel mill, gas works, coke plant, or transload facility. Based on cranes used to unload bulk materials from ships, the model features a long dockside boom, clamshell bucket, trolley, operator's cab, and detailed steel trusswork. Its modular design can be assembled in four different lengths to fit the available scene. The crane measures 10-1/4" (approximately 26cm) wide and 9" (22.9cm) tall. Many coke plants and manufactured-gas works were built beside waterways so ships could deliver the enormous quantities of coal required for daily production. Bridge cranes used long booms to reach into vessel holds, lift material with clamshell buckets, and deposit it in nearby stockpiles. Similar cranes handled iron ore, limestone, stone, and aggregates at steel mills and other waterfront industries.

The adjustable design allows the craneway to be matched to different industrial sites. The shorter arrangement can fit a compact waterfront or backdrop industry, while the longer versions can span large stockpiles, unloading tracks, and dock areas. Selecting the required length before assembly helps coordinate the crane with nearby rail lines, ships, buildings, and material-storage areas.
At a steel mill, the crane can unload iron ore, coal, or limestone for transfer to storage piles and processing facilities. At a coke plant or gas works, it can handle incoming coal delivered by ship. The same structure can serve a general bulk terminal where aggregates, minerals, and other materials are transferred between vessels, railroad cars, trucks, and storage areas.
Railroad operations can be developed around hopper cars, ore cars, and gondolas serving the crane. Switchers can move empty and loaded cars beneath or beside the structure, while conveyors, trucks, workers, and loaders connect the waterfront with the rest of the industrial complex.
