These facilities required long work bays, high interior clearance, and overhead cranes capable of moving machinery and locomotive components. The long main bays provide space for displaying large steam or diesel locomotives undergoing inspection and repair. Interior crane rails and supports establish the heavy-duty purpose of the building and are designed to accept the separately available Walthers Heavy-Duty Crane. Adding the optional crane can create scenes involving the movement of boilers, prime movers, generators, wheelsets, and other major components.

The attached annex provides additional shop space and can be detailed with the separately available overhead traveling crane. Workbenches, machinery, welders, mechanics, spare parts, and maintenance platforms can further develop the interior. Large doors and windows also make the building suitable for interior lighting and detailed operating scenes.

Optional end-wall doors and windows allow the structure to be configured for different track and building arrangements. Multiple kits can be combined to enlarge the shop, while the compatible Backshop can extend the complex with additional repair capacity. Tracks, service roads, storage areas, and utility structures can surround the building to create a complete railroad maintenance facility.
