A planing mill represents the next step after logs are cut into rough boards at a sawmill. Inside the building, rough-cut timbers are passed through woodworking machinery and finished to standardized dimensions. The processed lumber is then moved to an open-sided shed, where it can air-dry under cover before being stored, loaded into railroad cars, or shipped by truck.
