Walthers Cornerstone HO Scale Cinder Conveyor & Ash Pit Kit - 933-3181 adds an essential ash-handling facility to an HO scale steam locomotive terminal. Based on a Fairbanks-Morse design introduced during the late 1920s, equipment of this type was used at railroad facilities large and small through the final years of steam operation. The kit includes a detailed steel conveyor tower, machinery shed, under-track ash pit, and positionable bucket and dump chute. Browse the complete Walthers Cornerstone model railroad buildings and structures collection for additional layout-building options.
Steam locomotives produced ash and cinders that had to be removed during servicing. At the ash pit, waste could be dumped beneath the track and transferred by the conveyor bucket for disposal. Modeling this process adds another purpose to engine-terminal tracks and helps represent the routine work required to keep steam locomotives operating.
Build an HO Scale Steam Locomotive Ash Facility
The Walthers Cornerstone Cinder Conveyor & Ash Pit includes several features for creating a detailed steam-servicing scene:
- Based on a North American Fairbanks-Morse design
- Prototype design introduced during the late 1920s
- Suitable for steam-era locomotive terminals
- Detailed steel cinder-conveyor tower
- Separate machinery shed
- Complete under-track ash pit
- Positionable conveyor bucket
- Positionable dump chute
- Compact footprint for engine facilities large or small
- Decal signs included
- Plastic parts molded in appropriate colors
- Finished size of 2-1/4 x 3-3/4 x 5-1/2" (5.6 x 9.3 x 13.7cm)
- Ash pit extends 7/8" (2.1cm) below track level
The positionable bucket and chute allow the conveyor to be arranged for different operating scenes. The bucket can be shown near the ash pit or raised along the tower, while the chute can be directed toward a nearby disposal area or waiting freight car. The compact structure can be placed beside a roundhouse, engine house, coaling tower, sanding facility, or water column to develop a more complete steam locomotive terminal.
Expand Your Walthers Cornerstone Engine Terminal
