History of the Republic P-47N Thunderbolt
The Republic P-47 Thunderbolt was one of the most important American fighter aircraft of World War II. Powered by the Pratt & Whitney R-2800 Double Wasp radial engine, the Thunderbolt became known for its durability, heavy armament, and ability to withstand significant battle damage.
The P-47N was developed as a long-range version of the Thunderbolt specifically suited for operations in the Pacific Theater. Unlike earlier P-47 variants, the P-47N featured redesigned wings with increased internal fuel capacity, allowing it to accompany American bombers on extended missions over vast stretches of ocean.
Entering service during the final stages of World War II, the P-47N helped provide fighter escort protection for Boeing B-29 Superfortress bombers operating against Japan. Its combination of eight .50 caliber machine guns, powerful engine, and extended range made it a formidable fighter and ground attack aircraft.
